Creating a paludarium can seem like a complex challenge, but with the right materials and a well thought out approach, it becomes an exciting and rewarding experience. Mark-Jan Fioole MJ Aquascaping embarked on his first ever paludarium project, transforming a former African biotope aquarium into a stunning, thriving ecosystem. With the help of WIO's high quality natural decor, this build became an effortless and inspiring journey. Let’s dive into the highlights and key materials used to bring this paludarium to life.

The Vision and Setup
The paludarium was built in a 70cm x 45cm x 40cm aquarium, with the goal of creating a half-submerged layout that combines an underwater biotope with a lush, above water environment. The entire hardscape relied heavily on WIO products, ensuring a seamless and natural aesthetic.

The Hardscape: A Foundation of Natural Beauty Cork Background for an Immersive Look
One of the standout elements of this build was the use of WIO’s Background Cork. This material is lightweight, natural, and visually stunning, adding both texture and depth to the paludarium. Since cork naturally floats, it was securely attached to the back wall using silicone glue and left to cure for 24 hours.

WIO Decor Kit: A Complete Hardscape Solution
To simplify the hardscape design, MJ Aquascaping utilized WIO Decor Kit, which provides all the necessary elements to create a cohesive and realistic landscape. The specific kit used was inspired by the African nature and included:
Artist Mustard : A nutrient rich plant substrate, ideal for promoting healthy plant growth.
Bumblebee Stone: Large and medium sized inert rocks that form the primary structure of the underwater section.
Bumblebee Nano Boulders: Smaller stones that add fine detail and create a natural transition between elements.
WIO Riverbeds: The world's first biotope-inspired substrate , that instantly recreates the natural beauty and complexity of a riverbed for truly authentic and vibrant aquatic habitats.
Using these components, MJ Aquascaping quickly assembled a balanced and visually appealing hardscape in just a few minutes. The combination of rocks and sand provided a smooth, organic flow to the overall composition.

Adding Dimension with Cork Bark
To enhance the above-water section, additional WIO Branch Cork pieces were incorporated. These were split in half and arranged to mimic hollowed-out tree trunks, creating planting pockets for mosses and ferns. The cork was securely glued in place, forming a dynamic 3D effect.

Planting the Paludarium: A Lush, Thriving Environment Above-Water Planting
To bring the upper section to life, a selection of terrarium plants was introduced, including:
Fittonias.
Creeping plants.
Various mosses such as Sphagnum Moss, Cushion Moss, and Hypnum Moss
For substrate, WIO Sticky Soil was used. This innovative material is perfect for attaching plants to vertical surfaces and filling crevices. The moisture-retaining properties of Sticky Soil helped ensure optimal growing conditions for the plants.

Underwater Planting
The submerged section was planted with:
Cryptocoryne species
Anubias varieties
While Cryptocoryne species are not typically found in African biotopes, they were chosen for their aesthetic appeal and hardiness in this setup. The underwater section was designed to maintain a natural look while supporting plant growth with nutrient-rich substrate.

Adding the Fish: Bringing the Paludarium to Life
Once the ecosystem was stabilized, it was time to introduce the fish. The inhabitants included:
Jelly Bean Tetras
Lampeye Killifish
Bristlenose Plecos
Thanks to the pre-existing beneficial bacteria in the old substrate and the active canister filter, the new setup cycled quickly, allowing fish to be added with minimal stress.
Final Touches and Maintenance
To enhance the biotope aesthetic, WIO Wood Bed were added. These small natural elements, including twigs and tiny wood fragments, helped create an authentic, organic feel. Soaked beforehand to prevent floating, these materials also released beneficial tannins into the water.

Easy Maintenance and Long-Term Success
One of the most impressive aspects of this paludarium has been its stability. Over a four-week period, the setup required minimal maintenance, with only one water change and occasional trimming of fast-growing floating plants. The built-in lid system helped control humidity levels, ensuring the success of the above-water plants.
A Seamless and Rewarding Experience
MJ Aquascaping’s first paludarium build turned out to be a massive success, thanks to WIO’s natural, high-quality materials. From the stunning cork background to the detailed hardscape and lush planting, every element came together effortlessly.
